About
David James Clark
Drug & Alcohol Counselor, Ph.D. LMFT, AAMFT
From my professional experience (over 30 years) as professor, author, clinician in both private practice, and mental health and addiction programs, I do not believe there is really an "ideal client". Some people behave more like visitors (not interested in change), others as complainers (who want others or anything except themselves to change) and then there are those clients who are willing customers for change regardless of the dominant problem narrative or presenting problem. I'm genuinely curious, collaborative, relational, respectful, empathic, non-judgmental and invite clients to move toward the possibility of being interested in possible transformational or even small changes.
Having worked closely with most all of the recognized founders of different therapeutic approaches, focusing upon research-based Couples therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindful Meditation, relational Gestalt therapy and primarily more Postmodern ideas and practices (Solution-Focused, Narrative, Collaborative approaches and include research-based accountability measurements and referrals if so indicated.
Dr. Clark worked over five years as correctional psychologist at Illinois maximum security hospital and as a psychologist in chemical addiction and psychiatry programs in Chicago and in LA. Since the clinical outcome evidence indicates no one therapy approach works for every person, our constructionist integrated preferred approach: please refer to: Andrews & Clark Explorations.
